Not long ago handbuilt wheels were the only choice of cyclists everywhere. The success of Mavic's Helium wheelset changed the way consumers and companies viewed wheels to the point where by 2007, it was rare to find a handbuilt wheel on an OEM bike or in a shop. However, a rare few retailers kept the handbuilt tradition going and Excel Sports has been at the vanguard of that movement, selling and building literally thousands of handbuilt wheels since 1988.

There is no questioning the purpose and quality of high-end, pre-built wheelsets, but the vast majority of riders don't require the features these wheels offer, nor do they have the budget. An informed conversation between an Excel staffer and the customer will result in a wheelset built specifically for his/her needs, weight, and budget. Nearly all of our Sales and Service staff ride handbuilt wheels built right here in the shop. Most of us have also ridden factory wheels from Mavic, Zipp, Campagnolo, Shimano and HED, so we have a terrific breadth of experience.
