Road    Framesets

The Ritchey Break-Away Steel Road frameset makes it easy to travel with a full-size bike that rides just like a regular road bike. It features a patented system that is lighter, requires no special tools and faster to use than other travel bike systems. The Break-Away road packs into the included 8.5" W x 26.5"H x 31"L travel case with wheels. Ritchey does not guarantee what the airlines will charge, but most find it is usually much less than a full-size bike case.

The investment cast lugs and cromoly compression coupling by the bottom bracket are the keys to the Break-Away design. The lugs securely grip the seatpost in two places and join the upper portion of main triangle to the rear. On the downtube, nearly at the bottom bracket shell, the compression coupling forms the lower connection for the front and rear triangles. The coupler clamps unobtrusively around small flanges on the downtube.

This simple and effective design only adds 100 grams to the frame. Only a 4mm and 5mm Allen wrench and the removal of two bolts are required to take apart or assemble the frame. Cables are separated with these easy to use cable splitters.

You guys did a fantastic job with selection and build of my bike. Quality work everywhere and excellent attention to detail. I have had my Break-Away for a couple of years and have taken it in a hard case to Hawaii twice, Barcelona twice, Dublin, Scottsdale, and I have started using it on our team rides here in Virginia Beach, Va. It is light and responsive and puts a smile on my face. I have had no problems with travel nor assembly. The wheels have stayed true through travel in a hard case.

Pros: Light, reaponsive fun ride, quality build

Cons: had to search for better travel case

This is my favorite bike. Have ridden on both coasts, and hawaii. I travel a lot for my job and have had this bike for 3 years now. I have been on at least 10 trips and been charged only one time for oversize baggage fee, and that was only on the return.

Pros: Rides well, easy to pack, no bike fee.

Cons: none

I just returned from my French vacation and wanted to rave about my 58 cm steel ritchey break away. The guys at Excel did a great job building the bike with a campy chorus group, and instructing me on putting it back togther. It traveled to London, Barcelona, Argeles Su Mer in France, Annency, France, and finally Besancon, France. The wheels were slightly out of true but performed well in spite of that issue. The ride is awesome, cornering good, decents felt great. I own several steel bikes and this ones feels and rides as good as many of my custom frames. My father in law Jacques and all of the inlaws thought the frame was way cool, and I put Conti 4000 25mm tires on the frame and they felt perfect on the French country roads. One issue was that I needed to made sure the front brakes were adjusted pretty close to help with the larger tires for clearence.. overall I was very pleased with this purchase, and of course all the folks at Excel are awesome.

Pros: quality of frame and ease of putting together

Cons: none
