I bought this unit from Excel Sports to use with my Powertap. I had been using the Forerunner 305 which is not ANT+ compatible. I would echo the other review that the mount and pressure for depressing a button leaves something to be desired. The other downside, which I was aware of when I bought this product, is the inability to create an interval based workout to follow during a ride. The upsides are it is 1) light and super easy to set up, 2) it communicates flawlessly with the HR strap, speed/cadence unit, and powertap, 3) the display options are great, and 4) it provides reliable and consistent data. Limitations aside, its a great computer for the price. Be sure to download the free software upgrade for the unit if you use a powermeter. I could not program power zones into the unit w/o the upgrade. Finally, consider using WKO+ for power analysis, the garmin connect and garmin training center programs don’t provide much analysis of power data.

Cannot get max heartrate and max RPM without pressing a lot of buttons. Its not available as a regular display readout option. Even with the cadence and speed sensor connected, whether with GPS switched on or off, the unit will not read speed unless you are moving and the GPS is switched on. This makes using it on a trainer of very limited value. The buttons are so narrow and hard to press as an overtightened guitar string. I’m getting a sore thumbtip joint from all the setup entries I needed to make. The mount is wiggly. The force needed to press a button is almost enough to rotate it off the mount. The unit wiggles around form the pressure needed to press a button, and that can also cause the steering to twitch sideways sometimes if you don’t keep a steady other hand on the bars. Sad that a unit with so much potential suffers from bad GUI and ergonomics that only could result from someone who isn’t a cyclist having a major role in the design.

The Edge 500 is the right size with the right information and at the right price. The paging feature rotates three screens with the information you need. The battery life is about 18 hours as advertized and is displayed in %. The is a great upgrade from my Edge 305. I have gone to the web base Garmin Connect from the PC based Training Center program.
