The Garmin Edge 800 with the Performance-Navigation bundle is a feature-packed GPS unit that many riders have been waiting for. The heart of the Edge 800 is its touch screen. Switch training pages or pan and zoom with a tap. The touch screen is sensitive enough for work with a gloved hand, waterproof and durable enough to withstand the touch conditions of mountain biking. It is bright enough to easily be read on a sunny day.
The Edge 800 come with base maps and the bundle includes detailed road maps of the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Detailed topo maps and maps of other regions can be added with a data card. The Edge 800 can provide turn-by-turn navigation prompts and locate a gas station or convenience store if you are close to bonking.
The Edge 800 tracks large amount of ride data (including speed, time, cadence, heart rate, altitude, temperature, distance etc.) which lets you customized up to three training pages. Power data in watts can be recorded from a third party ANT+ power meter. Data can be downloaded to Garmin Connect or other training software like Training Peaks. Ride maps can be downloaded to see where you have been and uploaded for finding great routes in unfamiliar locations.

The last three years I have been riding with a Garmin 305 and the last twenty years with various Polar products. I replaced them all with the 800 for one month and it is just plain great! The flexibility and amount of available information are all anyone could ask for to analyze their rides or workouts. It can be used for training indoors by turning off the GPS feature. After two weeks with the pre-installed basic map I purchased the North America road map. When riding a pre-defined course the unit gives a beep when 1/8 mile from a turn and then again at 200 feet from the turn. Load in your century ride, or any other ride, and toss the route sheet. You won’t get lost or lose a turn. While the GPS features are great the heart rate, cadence, altitude, and speed information are all anyone could ask for. I don’t have a power meter but that can also be added. Invest in the Bar Fly mount. It is a great add on that makes it easy to remove the unit from your bike and makes it very visible
Pros: All the info you need, flexible, easy to use
Cons: Pricey
