Usually the sparse lugs on a MTB racing shoe mean traction when walking and running is compromised - but not with the Extreme thanks to Vibram lugs. The sticky rubber of the Vibram lugs grips rocks and slick surfaces amazingly well. Northwave includes toe spikes. There is even a rubber pad in the arch very useful for quick safe dismounts in cyclo-cross or MTB racing. This pad lets you clip out of your pedal and rest your foot on a flat rubber tread without slippage.

The innovative step by step closure means you can tighten or loosen the fit in a few seconds while riding. The side button provides a dual function. Pressing it allows a slight loosening. Lifting it allows a complete and immediate opening of the shoe. The dial has been completely redesigned in size and weight, resulting in being significantly lighter and thinner and its low-profile nature makes it more aero than a buckle.
