The Sportful R&D short is without a doubt the most advanced women's short ever produced. And what's a more impressive feat is they did it in such a low profile way, you're really not aware of the technology and frills. It's as if everything works in the background to help you perform at your peak. It has been our experience that a good cycling garment is one that you are hardly aware of, and that is certainly the case with the R&D short.
Sportful designers pull out all the stops with laser pattern cutting, hot welded seams and seamless leg and sleeve endings. These features make for a lightweight product that feels like a second skin. The main fabric used in the body of the shorts is called Sensitive Power. It comes in at 215 grams, so it is fairly compressive, but not so much so that is restrictive. It would appear to be the perfect blend of compression/support and all-day comfort. The leg cuffs also have a thin perforated skirt which serves as the last few inches. It has less compression than the rest of the bibs and breathes better due to added perforations. It means the shorts compression ends prior to the end of the leg cuff. You get the coverage without the uneeded restriction around the leg cuff.
The Infinity Donna seat pad features stretch and elasticity, an anatomical cut and offers 3 layers of progressive density foam which puts the padding where you need it and removes it from where you don't. The Soft Touch waist band has a great way of offering support without any bunching around the waist area. Probably one of the best designs we have seen for a women's waist band in a cycling short. We have yet to meet a woman that these shorts do not like.
