The mission when designing the R45 hubs was to make a lighter and stronger hub for the demands of road racing. The sleek looking hubshell has a classic sculpted look with no extra and unneeded material to shave weight. Inside the hubshell is a massive 17mm alloy axle for the ultimate in rigidity and stiffness.
These particular R45 hubs feature ceramic bearings. Now, we all know that ceramic bearings spin faster than their steel counter parts and are more durable. We also know there are plenty of ceramic bearing hubs on the market. What is unique about the Chris King ceramic bearings is the fact that they are made completely in house. Being fanatics about quality control, the folks at Chris King simply could not find a ceramic bearing that met their standards, so they designed and built them themselves! This proprietary bearing design allowed King to place more rolling elements per bearing for greater durability and precision. The R45 ceramic bearings also feature lightweight, low-friction seals for fast rolling and can be easily serviced at regular intervals.
