These plates have one task - preventing sole damage that occurs when the sole comes in direct contact with the retention bars of the pedals. Simple as that.

Sidi and Excel Sports highly recommend installing these if you are using Crank Bros or Time pedals. They are simple to install and will save your expensive shoes from unnecessary wear and tear. These plates are not required for Shimano SPD pedals.
