Bont Vaypor Plus Durolite Road Shoes

The Vapor is one of the finest cycling shoes available but Bont was not keen to rest on its laurels. Bont re-engineered the Vaypor from the ground up to create the Vapor+. The Vapor+ uses new materials, a new closure design and last shape that improves both fit and performance.

One of the new materials is the Durolite upper. Durolite has been developed and chosen for the Vaypor+ upper and liner for its extremely durable nature and light weight. The sole has been upgraded to a matt carbon unidirectional finish to improve the aesthetics of the sole and further reduce the weight of the shoe.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is the dual dial retention system has been introduced into the Vaypor+ design with dual directional bottom dial and quick release top dial for easy entry and exit. The nylon coated Kevlar wiring has been positioned to maximize the dispersion of retention load across the top of the foot. Ventilation of the Vaypor+ is maximized by including ventilation holes across the tongue, top of the forefoot, through the front bumper and arch area of the shoe. The ventilation system of the Vaypor+ has been designed to create an even airflow around the foot for cooling.

Conventional cycling shoes offer a dress shoe type shaping. Although highly aesthetic this will cause the toes along with the metatarsals to be overly constricted, compressing the nerves between the metatarsals which often results in the common "hot foot" sensation. Bont cycling shoes anatomical shaping allows the foot to function in its most efficient and anatomically correct position. The foot is supported so it can relax through the metatarsal joints allowing the pedaling force to be spread across the greatest possible surface area. Bont's lateral forefoot support ensures neutral positioning of the forefoot and alleviates common issues associated with over pronation and supination. These issues often result in incorrect tracking of knees causing injuries along with hip and lower back pain.

The real magic of the Vaypor is in the ultra-rigid, heat moldable, bathtub-style carbon sole. Bont uses An Epoxy Thermoset resin that allows the simple, custom fit process to be done at home. Just heat an oven to 140-160º Fahrenheit and leave the shoes in for 15-20 minutes. Let the shoes cool a touch and then strap them on and wait for them to cool. This process can be repeated as many times as required. Unlike other road shoes with very stiff soles, the Bont system virtually eliminates hotspots thanks to the combination of the very rigid sole fit perfectly to the bottom of your feet with no pressure points. If you have ever struggled with hot spots, give the Vaypor+ a try.

The regular Vaypors are way better in my opinion. I like Bonts for the unmatched heel retention. The new design of the carbon "tub" doesn't hold the heel in place at all. Even with the dials tightened all the way down, I can pull the shoe off of my foot. Also, this brand of boa seems to stick when trying to loosen them after riding with a high amount of tension on them. Even with heat molding, fit and function did not improve with the Vaypor . I gave these shoes 2 stars because the materials and build quality are still great, but they sacrificed all of the performance and fit features that made me a Bont fan in the first place.

Pros: Light.

Cons: Poor fit, no heel retention.
