Description
The2015 Colnago Strada SL 105 Bicycle provides you with a unique value opportunity to purchase a quality complete bike from a master of bicycle frame development and construction. On sale her at Excel Sports for under $1200. With long experience in working with metals of all kinds, Colnago understands how to make aluminum frames that sing, and maximize drivetrain stiffness while still maintaining a comfortable ride. While carbon fiber has certainly taken frame production to new standards, keep in mind that low-end carbon frames use lesser quality fiber and construction methods. An informed builder, using premium aluminum and the most current construction processes can produce a frameset that is cost effective, and easily out-performs low end carbon models. The full Shimano 105 5800 11-speed drivetrain is nearly as precise as it's higher end siblings, super-reliable, and cost-effective when replacing worn parts.
The Strada SL frame is constructed from pure 6000 series aluminum that has been cold-worked and shaped into polygonal shapes through hydroform processing. Hydroforming is a die forming process that presses alloy into desired shapes and tapers, while adding strength during the process. Beyond optimizing performance, this technology provides superb compliance and comfort not typically associated with an aluminum frame. What this really means, is that through modern technology, Colnago has been able to provide a frameset with squared and polygonal shapes which optimizes the balance of performance with ride quality, while keeping the weight to a scant 2.5lbs.
With decades of experience in shaping tubes to provide optimal performance and comfort, Colnago delivers the Strada SL frame, and the tube shapes make the bike. The ride quality is precise, compliant and at 2.5lbs it's lighter than any carbon frame in this category. The Strada SL's carbon fork features an aluminum steerer with a 1⅛ to 1¼ taper for overall stiffness and precise steering input. Welds and paint are examples of absolute perfection indicative of Colnago. When matched with precision components and strong kit performers, the Strada SL 105 is a bike to be reckoned with, at a price that works for every budget.
The drivetrain is supplied by Shimano. Completely outfitted with 105 5600: 11-speed STI shifters, crankset, derailleurs, chain and cassette and chain efficiently get the job done. For the brakes, Colnago installs their X-Brake, which is comparable to a 105-level product and uses the same leverage ratio as the Shimano shift/brake lever. The braking power and feel are predictable and sure, working perfectly on the precision-machined aluminum brake tracks. Important to note: The All Black version comes with the Shimano RS-11 wheelset. The RS11 is a workhorse wheel that can handle the stress of aggressive sprints and climbing out of the saddle, yet will be durable with a smooth ride quality for seasons to come. The Team Yellow color ships with a hand-laced wheelset built on a Formula hubset equivalent to the RS11 in quality, but with a more traditional spoke patterning. Both wheelsets ship with the 700x25 Continental Ultra Sport II tires, which provide both grip and puncture protection.
Finishing the bike off is the cockpit by Deda. The 31.8mm compact alloy RHM Elementi handlebar is light and stiff, and is firmly controlled by the Deda Elementi stem. Colnago spec'ed a 31.6mm seatpost, which is alloy, with a 20mm offset. Colnago's saddle partner has long been Selle Italia, and the sleek, but comfortable X1 model graces the post. You'll notice quality, proven components and technologies across the board. Take a look again at the price. If you are looking for maximum value, in a bike that is ready to ride once you install your pedals, look no further. And keep in mind your savings will allow you to make small upgrades at first, or over time. A carbon seatpost would be a great place to start. The 2015 Colnago Strada SL 105 Complete Bike delivers all an entry level rider could ask for, and much, much more. Precision shifting, confident handling for all the fun you wish for on a bike, all at a tremendous value. You won't find a better combination at this price, from any manufacturer, let alone Colnago.
