If you want a clincher cross tire that is solid on hardpack, in the wet, and in virtually any mixed condition, you should strongly consider the Continental Cyclo X King. Great all-around cyclocross tires are becoming rare, as increased specialization takes over. There is nothing wrong with condition specific tires, but not everyone has multiple wheel and tire set-ups, and frankly, many courses defy description. Even the cleanest, tightest course at 7am can be a rutted out mess by noon. Constant racing, changing temperatures and weather conditions can really spoil your event. Continental's BlackChili compound ensures that the X King has exceptionally low rolling resistance, yet offers phenomenal grip in wet or dry circumstances. With proprietary synthetic and natural rubber compounds, the secret to the properties of BlackChili comes from special nanometric carbon soot particles, which are optimized in shape and surface properties for each tire it is used in. In the Cyclo X King, emphasis was put on speed, smooth rolling, and edge grip. Combined with the supple Race Sport 3 ply, 180 tpi casing, the magic compound delivers amazing wet weather traction, even on roots, rocks, and flyovers.
The tread pattern was inspired by it's mountain bike breathren of the same name, and just like that XC racing tire, the dense, alternating center tread carries tremendous speed, while the transitional knobs, and more prominent edge blocks continue the pattern. Directional siping- across on the center knobs, and lengthwise on the side and edge knobs, contributes to overall grip. This high-grip tire sheds material quickly, despite the tight knob placement, due to the alternating pattern. Due to its predictable handling characteristics, fast rolling nature, ridiculous grip, and excellent durability the Cyclo X King is one of the best clincher cyclocross tires we have ridden- for racing, training, gravel races, commuting, etc. And that makes it special, if not a specialist.
