Description
Top-end track tubular tires are known for two things: speed and speed. Sure, there is some grip and a little more speed, but every track rider knows how a light layer of dust feels as their wheel slides out from underneath. With the Sonderklasse II (special class) track tubular, Continental set-out to change track performance and safety, without compromising speed. How? With their use of the truly special Black Chili rubber compound. Optimized for speed, grip, longevity and overall performance on wooden track boards, the Sonderklasse II lives up to it's promise, and it's name.
The Black Chili compound was developed Continental's Germany factory, and all such tires come from the facility. This unique tread rubber mixture improves rolling resistance by 26% and provides 30% more grip than the activated silica compounds most companies are using. Black Chili allows the Sonderklasse II to have the uncompromisingly slick profile it shows, and designed for maximum speed, but offers hold on the wood boards that is impressive and confidence inducing.
This tubular tire features a perfectly round 3ply casing of 60 TPI layers, for 180 TPI total. Continental uses this system successfully in all of their top road tubulars and even their clinchers (in a different configuration, obviously), and it is has smooth, perfectly balanced ride, valve stem notwithstanding. While ideal for track racing on wooden boards of all kinds, Continental hypes the Sonderklasse II Tubular as Six-Day event tire for it's durability and performance. Anyone who has ridden in, or watched, a Six-Day event knows how grueling those conditions can be. If you race on high quality wood tracks and you are looking for a new tubular tire, you have found it. Just a tip- many insiders use a very fine sandpaper to scuff the tires lightly before use. This takes off the outer sheen and is much more appropriate than riding it outdoors for the same purpose. Now go fast, ride the right side of the black and go faster. Black Chili will help you hold your line.
