When elite cyclists and triathletes seek flat out speed, there are just a couple of wheels that can truly contend for the podium. But even the fastest aerodynamic wheels must be able to handle crosswinds, variable road conditions, and some technical handling. Such wheels must also fit into various frameset designs, and be cable to maximize the combined aero properties of tires, wheels and the frame itself. Enve's established partnership with Simon Smart, a true aerodynamic guru, has pushed traditional thinking on rim shapes, depths, and widths that best match the goals of pro cyclists and triathletes. The Smart Enve System optimizes rim shapes to maintain aerodynamic principles at all common yaw angles, as well as how the wheels interface with frame surfaces. Enve tested wheels and tires on many frame designs in order to ensure the maximum drag reduction in the broadest set of circumstances. The result is a wheel system that minimizes drag, is incredibly stable at all times, and performs no matter the situation, giving the rider ultimate confidence. The SES 7.8 features a 71mm front rim depth, and combine it with an 80mm depth for the rear wheel. In addition to the rim depth, SES produces complementary rim widths: a 29mm wide front and a 27.5mm wide rear. The additional width improves handling by delivering more direct tire support. This is particularly noticeable in the front, where the cyclist must rely on the leading cornering edge. The rim shapes and depths have been optimized to work on most bike frames and brake caliper designs with a 25mm tire. Not only is this a carbon clincher, but the SES 7.8 rims are Tubeless Road compatible, a true advantage with the lightweight, friction reducing tubeless road tires available today.
SES provides the rim and overarching properties of the 7.8 Clincher Wheelset, but don't forget about the details of the wheel build. Enve constructs wheels with the essential balance of lateral, torsional, and vertical stiffness. Laterally, your wheel must track perfectly, especially under power load or cornering force. Torsional stiffness is a representation of power transfer from the hub to the rim, often referred to as wind-up. All wheels must have some vertical compliance to be able to handle road impact or compaction. The level of this deflection is your vertical stiffness, and starts from the hub outward. We offer the SES 7.8 in two hub options: the DT 240 and the Enve Carbon. Both hubsets are are laced to the Enve rims using lightweight, stiff, slightly bladed DT Aerolite spokes. This combination, laced radially in the front with 20 spokes, and two-cross in the rear with 24 spokes, truly creates a tunable ride quality and impressive acceleration from both hub engagement systems. The DT 240 rear hub is famously easy to service and Enve licensed the star ratchet system for their carbon hubs.
The j-bend Aerolites are widely available and fully truable with the external Enve nipples, making overall care and service simple. DT's contributions are very light, strong, and durable; a perfect match for the Enve SES 7.8 rims. All together, the SES 4.5 Carbon Clincher Wheelset featuring DT Swiss weighs just 1657 grams, a very light weight for such a deep section wheelset. The Enve carbon hub model push light weight to borderline ridiculous, saving nearly 50 grams, but the Utah company developed the sculpted design for maximizing aerodynamics, as well as incredible stiffness and torque deflection. To reduce drag internally, Enve opted for Ceramic Speed's incredible low friction ceramic bearings. At 1560 grams, the Enve carbon equipped version is wonderfully light, looks fantastic, and has been proven undoubtedly fast in wind tunnels and in real world racing environments.
The greatest accomplishment Enve achieved with the SES 7.8 is that this deep section wheelset is light enough for racing, even when climbs rise ahead. The stability and handling characteristics are exceptional at any depth. The 2nd generation brake track system delivers incredible braking performance.
