Description

Garmin has updated their largest Edge GPS cycling computer head unit, with two versions available. The standard unit, and a Solar model. More of an advanced generation than an evolution of the dominant large interface unit, both Edge 1040 models have improved hardware, new cycling training and performance tools, incredible GPS accuracy, the long desired USB-C interface, new aluminum alloy quarter-turn mount, some of the best mapping and routing options available in the GPS cycling head unit market. Garmin also added a truly simplified setup and a streamlined interface to make it quick and easy to access the information, courses and tools you need, and even adjust data fields right from the Edge device or from your paired smartphone. With most of the features technical or training oriented, we have listed all below. Garmin is known for deep, wide-ranging features, which allow the you to tap into a variety of tools that offer the most guidance and information. It is true that no one uses every feature, but you can find just about everything you require to improve and maximize your cycling ability and overall fitness.

Never stop cycling with Edge® 1040. It’s their first GPS bike computer with multi-band GNSS technology for even better coverage under dense tree cover, on remote mountain trails and even in the urban canyon. It’s also packed with performance features that help you understand your strengths and weaknesses to coach you through any challenge. When paired with your compatible sensors, it can even help you manage your efforts by providing power targets throughout a course and stamina feature insights, so you know how much gas is left in the tank. And the setup is simple, so you can take it out of the box and be out riding in no time. As with previous Edge units the Connect and Connect IQ apps are your gateways to overall monitoring data and interface accessories, respectively.

The Edge 1040 Solar only extends the 1040's capabilities. There are many variables, but even with typical cyclist usage, you can potentially move from 35 hours of battery life to 45 hours. That calculation assumes that daytime riding is done in consistent 75,000 lux conditions.. Garmin has a chart showing full breakdowns and the potential is impressive. Clearly, solar power is dependent on sun, light access to the unit, etc., but Garmin's Solar Power Glass built into the Edge 1040's large screen can be quite effective. Built off their Edge testing and experience with smaller watch face panels, Garmin has developed a helpful "Tips for Using the Edge 1040 Solar Device” in the Owner’s Manual.
