Description

Chrome-molybdenum steel handles the stresses that go into track and fixed-gear drivetrains without the weight penalties of overbuilt construction. The Model V from Izumi uses high-carbon alloy for the connecting pins, the same material formulation you'd find in low-friction ball bearings. This pin material delivers a 300% durability increase over standard single-speed chains while maintaining the stiffness needed for direct power transfer. The proprietary surface treatment on the outer plates improves abrasion resistance and creates the contrast between gold outer links and black inner links.

The 3/32" width fits drivetrains built around narrow chainrings and cogs, which makes this the go-to option for riders running tight chain clearances or pursuing weight savings over the 1/8" version. Full bushings support the precision rollers at each link, which keeps the chain running quietly and reduces friction losses compared to bushing-free designs. If you're coming from a standard chain and notice the Model V feels stiffer when you first install it, that rigidity is intentional. The high-carbon pins resist flex under load, which translates to more of your pedaling effort reaching the rear wheel instead of getting absorbed by chain deflection.

Izumi ships the chain with a threaded bolt and nut connector link instead of a press-fit master link. The threaded connection provides a more secure closure that won't work loose under the kind of pedaling forces that track riders generate during standing starts or sprint efforts. This is the same construction philosophy as the 1/8" Model V that carries NJS certification for professional keirin racing, adapted to the narrower width that endurance track riders and fixed-gear street riders prefer.... Bomber. 4 years on a heavily ridden commuter and still going strong. For sure worth the money. Great product.
