Description
Hollow pins and hollow plates define KMC's SL-series chains, and the X10SL Gold takes this weight reduction approach while adding titanium nitride coating for durability and visual impact. The coating process deposits a ceramic compound onto the chain's outer surfaces, creating the distinctive gold appearance along with a harder, smoother finish that resists corrosion and reduces friction at the contact points between chain and drivetrain. KMC applies this treatment across the entire chain rather than just the outer plates, so the coating works where it matters most during actual operation.
The weight savings in the X10SL come from material removal rather than material substitution. KMC machines slots into both inner and outer plates and bores out the connecting pins, pulling approximately 20 grams from the chain compared to their standard X10 construction. The remaining material still handles the tension loads of pedaling without issue, and the slotted plates actually shed mud and debris more readily than solid designs. For riders tracking grams across their build, this is where chain weight reduction happens without compromising the shifting characteristics that make the X-series popular.
Shifting performance relies on the same Double X-Bridge plate geometry and chamfering found throughout KMC's 10-speed lineup. The bridge shape between rivets creates engagement ramps that guide the chain onto cassette cogs and chainring teeth with minimal hesitation, while the chamfered edges reduce the catch points that cause slow or incomplete shifts. The X10SL works across Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo 10-speed drivetrains, so compatibility isn't a concern regardless of which groupset you're running.... Read More
