The essence of the shoe starts with the Energy Full Carbon SLR Outsole, which is not only super light, and incredibly stiff (rates 100 on Mavic's scale), but also the thinnest such sole we have seen, which brings your foot that much closer to the pedal axle, so much so that Mavic supplies shorter than normal cleat mounting bolts for the purchaser. From the sole up, two carbon structures deliver foot control, preventing twisting and loss of power, as well as ensuring powerful upstroke on while climbing. The Energy Lock Carbon Comp is the curved T-structure on the back of the heel, keeping the heel cupped in place, and preventing heel roll when powering out of the saddle. The Frame Carbon structure creates a type of basket over the foot, which allows the upper to be so lightweight and breathable. When the Ergo Dial systems draw the upper together, the Frame Carbon is more secure ensuring no energy is wasted during any segment of the pedal stroke.

The upper itself is bonded, not stitched and carries Mavic's low volume ErgoFit 3D principles up from the shape of the sole and last system through the soft, breathable tongue. Super breathable and quite comfortable (for those whose feet fit the shape and structure), the upper feels like a technical sock if you close your eyes. ErgoFit 3D dictates the shape of the foot for what Mavic feels are the optimal support and pedaling posture of the foot. The concept carries through the lightweight cushioning Ortholite insole. The Ergo Dial system allows for micro-adjustment in both directions for both upper and lower dials, and the addition of the Smart Release is welcome- and fully appreciated after several hard hours in the saddle when your hands feel like spongy hard rubber talons and the last thing you feel like doing is manipulating a small device.

Mavic's fit is somewhat conservative in the Cosmic Ultimate Road Shoe. It favors mid-width feet, with some arch curvature, and a relatively low volume overall. The upper, with its flexibility and Ergo Dials, gives you some hop eif your feet are higher volume, but too much width at the metatarsal can be challenging, as your bone structure may sit outside the sole. Mavic is offering a Maxi-Fit option as well for riders who need more width and volume. All in all, the Cosmic Ultimate is a race platform that can be comfortable and supportive for the right feet for everyday use, especially in hot weather.
