It is almost impossible to take your eyes off the rim of the Crossmax SL. The 19mm internal rim width meets expectations for today's rider preference, and the lightweight Maxtal extrusion easily accommodates the UST tubeless standard and the ability to carry any XC tire to it's ideal footprint. The proprietary Maxtal alloy is light and strong. The rim joint is welded, then milled to perfectly match the rest of the rim. This technology, SUP, ensures the rim is as strong at the joint as it is at any other point of the extrusion. Mavic's use of Fore bridging adds external wall strength, with the rim-borne nipples threaded in to the reinforced zone which then allows the Zicral bladed spokes threaded right into the nipples. With the reinforcing carrying the spoke load, Mavic then mills out excess rim material in 4 dimensions. This process, ISM-4D produces the sculpted rim effect and keeps the rotating weight as low as possible. The distinctive look isn't for aesthetics, but ends up giving the rim an attractive distinction.

The straight pull, alloy Zicral spokes have proven to be very strong and resilient over the years. The low spoke count wheels must be run at a high tension for maximum strength and lateral stiffness. Both the front and rear wheels use just 20 spokes. The front is laced 2 cross, and the rear is laced with Mavic's Isopulse system, with the drive side in radial, while the non-drive side is 2 cross. The incredibly high tension drive side allows the rim to be dished most efficiently in relation to the hub. The non-drive spokes can easily be accessed for potential repair.
