Enduro style riding and racing asks the most of any wheel design. From handling drops from up to 4 feet, able to laugh off harsh impacts and technical trail, and yet being light enough for both quick accelerations and long grinding climbs, the Crossmax XL Pro is an ideal wheel for 27.5 riders who push all the boundaries and want to be able to repeat the effort the next day, equipment intact. This 6-bolt disc, Shimano freehub version is a great value at demo pricing, and as you can see from the pics, it is near perfect.
The business end of the Crossmax XL Pro is the lightweight, yet incredibly strong 23mm internal width UST rim (27mm external) which is capable of handling tires from 1.5 to 3.0", though the latter makes more sense for the intended purpose. The sidewalls have been strengthened to handle more impact, yet Mavic has used their ISM milling process to remove non-essential material elsewhere, keeping the rim as light as possible without compromising the strength of the extruded Maxtal alloy. The usual playlist of Mavic rim tech is here: SUP welded and milled joint, FORE drilled spoke nipple inserts, Maxtal. The 24 (front and rear) flat bladed, straight pull Zicral spokes are run 2x on the front wheel for impact protection, and Isopulse on the rear, which is radial for the driveside and 2x for the non-drive for optimal energy transfer and better spoke tension balance from flange to flange.
