Description

With the 52/63 rim and wheelset design, Reserve has pushed forward more effectively into the aero wheel market for true aero road bikes. The mixed profile front and rear setup of the 52|63 provides for maximum stability, lowest weight and optimized aerodynamics. The rear wheel is asymmetrical, which creates a stronger, stiffer and more durable wheel, while the front and rear wheels have different heights, and widths. Reserve claims to have traveled the US, mapping different types of wind conditions, and then using this data to replicate real world conditions in the wind tunnel. All this work culminated in the creation of their first wheelset designed with what they are calling Turbulent Aero technology. This 52|63 DT 180 hubset equipped wheelset weighs in at svelte 1514 grams combining the proven aerodynamics with DT's SINC ceramic bearings for the hub shells and the 36 EXP freehub body. The story of the 52|63 tracks with the development the 2023 S5, winner of the 2022 Tour de France.

Cervelo's S5 bikes roll on the ground-breaking Reserve 52|63 wheel design concept that has been co-developed with Reserve to increase stability and reduce drag in turbulent aero conditions. The partners found an innovative way of engineering and testing wheels to perform optimally in turbulent aerodynamic conditions. Wind tunnels usually measure performance in ideal "laminar" flow situations- but such conditions are unrealistic in the real world. The experts within Cervelo helped Reserve develop rim profiles that stall less dramatically at greater yaw angles. In riding terms the wheel becomes more stable (not less), as if it is more planted- or connected to the road surface, and thus more confidence inspiring. The Reserve 52|63 Wheelset is 50g faster in laminar (traditional) flow, and 54g faster in turbulent flow than the outgoing Reserve 50|65 combo. Properly engineered wider wheels and tires can be truly faster aerodynamically, and more forgiving to ride. The S5 comes spec'ed with 28mm tires but has clearance for up to a 34mm (measured) tire. The frameset is co-optimized to complement the wider Reserve 52|63 turbulent aero wheels. In addition to the handling benefits, this saves over 5 watts compared to the previous Reserve wheelset. All that said, the 52|63 is stil incredibly effective in most aero road style framesets.

DT Swiss supplies their incredibly light weight, fast responding, seriously reliable, wonderfully easy-to-service DT 180 Spline Center Lock disc hubset for the 52|63 wheelset. The 180's are lightest premium hubset in the DT line, and can compete with any set made anywhere in the world. The straightpull spokes allow for very high tension, excellent power transfer, lateral stiffness, and some rim and rider forgiveness. External nipples are used for easy true/tension with this 24 hole (front and rear) set-up with 2x/2x lacing all-around. The hubs are built for thru-axle use, with a 12/100mm front and 12/142mm rear configuration to go along with the Center Lock disc rotor interface. The drive system on the rear hub is the DT 36 EXP Ratchet freehub; known as one of the easiest ever offered to service or replace, with exceptional reliability and engagement. DT's own SINC ceramic ball/steel race cartridge bearings and seals are superior, delivering exceptional protection from the elements and long life to go along with minimal friction and tremendous rolling speed.

Reserve is a company committed to creating the best carbon rims for mountain, gravel and road cycling. Started by engineers from Santa Cruz, then buttressed through a professional partnership with Cervelo, the team at Reserve has built a reputation for exceptional strength, resilience, and physical characteristics, including tubeless read excellence and impressive aerodynamics. From day one of rim sales Reserve has backed their carbon rims with a lifetime warranty, which is the ultimate indicator of belief in the product and the desire to back it up.
