Description

Mechanical 12-speed road groupsets used to end at the last generation of 105, but the R7120 changes that math. This is Shimano's mechanical dual control lever for the R7100 series, paired with the BR-R7170 hydraulic disc caliper, and it's the answer for riders who want current-generation gear counts and hydraulic braking without stepping up to Di2 pricing. The lever body is composite with an aluminum brake blade, and the whole shift-and-brake package draws its shifting internals from the same technology tree as Shimano's mountain bike lineup.

The bracket shape is where most of the ergonomic work lives. Shimano developed the revised hood and lever position from a study of hand shapes, and the practical result is a shorter reach from the hood to the blade in both the tops and drops. If you've ever felt like previous 105 levers were a stretch when you're deep in the drops on a long descent, this generation addresses that directly. Reach adjust is built in and dials with a hex key, so smaller hands can bring the blade closer without penalizing riders who prefer the standard position.

The BR-R7170 caliper is the same flat-mount unit used across the R7100 hydraulic range, including on Di2 builds. It runs a 10% wider pad clearance than the previous generation, which cuts down on rotor rub after wheel swaps and gives you more margin when a rotor gets slightly tweaked mid-ride. One-way bleeding through Shimano's funnel system keeps service straightforward, and the caliper ships with L03A resin pads featuring the finned backplate for heat management on long descents. Shimano mineral oil runs the hydraulic side, which stays cleaner in the system than DOT fluid and doesn't strip paint if you spill during a bleed.... Read More
