Dura-Ace WH-R9270-C36-TL Front Wheel
Description
Wheel design has increasingly split into two philosophies over the past decade—chase the aero number at the wind tunnel and let weight fall where it may, or pull mass off the rim and accept the aerodynamic penalty on flat roads. Shimano's Dura-Ace WH-R9270-C36-TL front wheel plants itself firmly in the second camp, using a 36mm carbon rim depth to preserve enough aero character for mixed terrain while stripping 55 grams off the previous-generation C40 rim. The result is a 620-gram front wheel purpose-built for the kind of riding where acceleration and crosswind stability matter more than sustained straight-line efficiency.
The rim itself measures 36mm deep with a 21mm internal width and 28mm external width, hooked-bead construction that supports modern 25-30mm road tires with room for lower pressures on tubeless setups. Shimano's D2 rim profile aims for a broader stall angle in yaw, giving the front wheel more predictable steering behavior when crosswinds hit at oblique angles—a characteristic that matters more on the front than the rear, since directional stability lives there.
Twenty-four bladed stainless steel spokes lace to the hub in a two-cross pattern, straight-pull heads at both ends. The hub uses cup-and-cone bearings—Shimano's long-running answer to serviceability, with the trade-off that periodic adjustment beats sealed-cartridge simplicity for riders who don't mind a cone wrench. Axle spacing is 12x100mm thru-axle with Center Lock rotor mounting, matching current disc road conventions.
