Description

Rotational weight matters more than static weight when acceleration defines the riding experience. Shimano's engineering team concentrated mass reduction efforts on the rim itself when developing the WH-R9270-C36-TL, recognizing that outer-circumference weight accounts for roughly 60% of the energy required to change wheel speed. The resulting wheelset tips scales at 1350 grams while delivering a 55-gram reduction at the rim compared to the previous-generation C40. This distribution philosophy produces the lively acceleration response that climbers and criterium racers prioritize over aerodynamic efficiency at sustained speeds.

The 36mm rim depth positions the C36 as the shallowest option in the Dura-Ace lineup, trading some aerodynamic benefit for reduced rotational inertia and improved handling in crosswinds. Yet the D2 rim profile still delivers measurable drag reduction at yaw angles from 0 to 15 degrees, meaning riders sacrifice less aerodynamic performance than the shallow depth might suggest. Shimano's wind tunnel testing demonstrated that the wide 28mm external width creates efficient airflow transition when paired with 26-30mm tires, capturing meaningful aerodynamic benefit despite the conservative depth. Internal width measures 21mm, supporting tire widths from 25mm to 32mm with proper casing shape and the hooked bead design enabling tubeless setup.

Drive rigidity improvements carry through from the deeper C50 and C60 models, with the C36 delivering a 63% increase over its predecessor. The Direct Engagement freehub system maintains 360-degree contact between hub ratchet and freehub body, eliminating the engagement delay inherent in traditional pawl mechanisms. This architecture translates pedal inputs into wheel acceleration with minimal mechanical lag, a characteristic that becomes perceptible during repeated accelerations out of corners or attacks on climbs. Shimano machined the entire freehub structure from aluminum, saving 45 grams while achieving the increased rigidity that testing with professional riders identified as the primary contributor to perceived wheel responsiveness....
