Description

Shimano built the GRX ST-RX810-LA to answer a specific question: what does the left lever do on a 1x gravel bike? Without a front derailleur to shift, the paddle behind the brake lever has nothing to talk to — so Shimano repurposed it to actuate a cable-pull dropper post instead. The LA suffix is the giveaway. This particular kit ships as the complete front-brake half of a GRX 1x hydraulic system: the pre-bled ST-RX810-LA lever, a BR-RX810 flat mount caliper with finned resin pads, and the SM-BH90-JK-SSR hose already connected between them. Cut the hose to length, bleed if needed, install the rotor, and the front brake is done.

The dropper actuation runs on an 8.3mm cable stroke pulled by what would normally be the front shift paddle. That number matters because most cable-actuated droppers are designed around mountain bike remotes with longer pulls, so compatibility isn't automatic. The cable head has to sit at the lever end, which means your dropper post needs to clamp onto the cable itself rather than expecting a head at the post. Most current cable droppers accommodate this — PNW, KS, and Fox Transfer among them — but it's worth checking the spec sheet before ordering. Cable and housing route internally through the hood and out the back, keeping the cockpit tidy.

Braking is standard GRX hydraulic, which is to say quite good. SERVOWAVE geometry ramps up power as the lever moves through its stroke, so initial contact is quick and modulation gets progressively firmer as you pull harder. Both reach and free stroke are adjustable at the lever, which lets riders with smaller hands bring the blade closer to the bar and dial in exactly when the pads engage. The lever hood sits 18mm taller than a standard road STI to put your hands in a more neutral position on rough surfaces, and the textured brake blade holds onto wet gloves better than smooth aluminum does.

Features

  • Left-side hydraulic brake lever with integrated cable-pull dropper remote
  • Compatible with Shimano GRX 1x drivetrains only — dropper actuation replaces the front shifter function
  • 8.3mm dropper cable stroke; requires droppers that clamp to cable rather than cable head at post
  • Ships pre-bled with BR-RX810 flat mount front caliper and SM-BH90-JK-SSR hose
  • Includes IceTech finned L03A resin brake pads
  • SERVOWAVE lever geometry for progressive braking power
  • Reach adjust and free stroke adjust at the lever
  • Anti-slip textured brake lever blade
  • Rotary axle position sits 18mm higher than standard road levers for gravel-oriented hand position
  • OPTISLICK-coated inner cable for dropper actuation
  • Handlebar clamp diameter: 23.8-24.2mm
  • Uses Shimano mineral oil hydraulic fluid
  • Rotor and mount adapter sold separately
  • Lever weight: 263 grams
