Description

Shimano's SPD cleats use a two-bolt mounting pattern that recesses into the sole of mountain bike and gravel shoes, allowing you to walk normally when you're off the bike. The metal cleat body sits below the tread surface rather than protruding like road cleats, which makes them practical for mixed riding that includes hike-a-bike sections or coffee stops. Shimano currently offers three SPD cleat designs: the SM-SH51 single-release, the SM-SH56 multi-release, and the newer CL-MT001 multi-entry design.

The SM-SH51 cleats release only when you twist your heel outward, which requires a deliberate motion that reduces the chance of unintended disengagement. This makes them the choice for aggressive riding where you're applying force from multiple angles or moving your body around on technical terrain. The SM-SH51 comes standard with most Shimano SPD pedals and provides four degrees of rotational float, which allows your foot to pivot slightly while clipped in without releasing from the pedal. The SM-SH56 multi-release cleats allow you to exit by twisting your heel outward, twisting inward, or pulling straight up while twisting. The additional release options make them easier to disengage, particularly in situations where your ankle position limits your ability to twist outward—like when you're stopped on a steep uphill with your heel dropped below your toes.

The CL-MT001 represents Shimano's first major cleat redesign in three decades. It maintains the single-direction release of the SM-SH51—you still twist your heel outward to disengage—but adds multi-entry capability that lets you clip in from three different angles. You can engage using the traditional front-first method, lead with your heel and roll forward, or simply stomp straight down onto the pedal. This makes clipping in easier when you're restarting on steep terrain or need to engage quickly after a technical section. The CL-MT001 features a thinner, tapered profile that provides better ground clearance when walking, reducing the clacking sound on pavement and minimizing cleat wear. The updated design works with all existing Shimano SPD pedals and shoes while offering the same four degrees of float as the other cleat options.... Read More
