Ultegra BR-R8170 Disc Brake Caliper
Description
Rotor rub complaints and finicky bleed processes drove much of the redesign work behind Shimano's Ultegra BR-R8170 disc brake caliper. The previous R8070 generation worked, but tight pad clearances meant even minor wheel flex during hard cornering or out-of-saddle climbing could cause the rotor to kiss a pad and produce that distinctive scraping sound that makes every road cyclist wince. The R8100-series caliper opens up pad clearance by 10 percent, giving the rotor more room to move without contact and making initial setup less of a millimeter-tolerance exercise.
Modulation sees a real step forward in this generation. The initial braking point arrives earlier in the lever stroke, so the pads contact the rotor sooner, but the usable control range between first bite and full lockup is wider than before. That matters on technical descents where you're metering speed corner to corner and don't want to grab too much brake and unsettle the bike. The two-piston design uses phenolic resin pistons rather than metal, which reduces heat transfer into the mineral oil and keeps lever feel consistent through long, sustained descents where fluid boil used to be a real concern.
Bleeding is where mechanics will notice the biggest quality-of-life change. Shimano reworked the fluid path and added a dedicated bleed port with a separate valve screw, which makes pushing air out of the system faster and more reliable than the R8070 process. The system runs Shimano mineral oil rather than DOT fluid, so it's less aggressive if it contacts paint or seals during service. Ice Technologies finned pads are included, and the caliper accepts the full Ice Tech pad range for riders who want to swap in metal compounds for wet-weather work.... Read More
