Description
Gravel riding throws everything at your drivetrain—mud, sand, chain slap on rough descents, and gear ranges that would make a road derailleur weep. The SRAM Force XPLR AXS D2 rear derailleur handles all of it through a purpose-built design for mixed-surface riding. This isn't a road derailleur with a longer cage bolted on. SRAM engineered the XPLR platform specifically for the demands of gravel, where you need massive cassette range without sacrificing shift precision.
The D2 generation brings meaningful updates over the original XPLR derailleur. A redesigned parallelogram geometry improves chain wrap and tension across the full cassette range, which translates to quieter operation and more consistent shifting when you're bouncing through rough terrain. The clutch mechanism uses SRAM's Orbit fluid damping system to control chain movement without the stiff pedaling feel that some friction-based clutches create. You get the chain retention benefits without fighting the drivetrain on every pedal stroke.
Cassette compatibility spans from 10-36T up to 10-44T, giving you legitimate climbing gears for loaded bikepacking or steep gravel climbs while keeping tight spacing in the gears you actually use most. The system pairs with SRAM's XPLR-specific cassettes or works with standard Eagle mountain cassettes if you need even more range. AXS wireless shifting means no cable routing through the frame, which simplifies builds and eliminates a common failure point for bikes that see genuine off-road use.... Read More
