Description
Flattop technology separates SRAM's Transmission chains from their traditional Eagle chains, and the distinction matters more than the name suggests. The GX Eagle Transmission chain uses wider inner plates and tighter manufacturing tolerances than standard Eagle chains, which changes how the chain interfaces with Transmission cassettes and derailleurs. You cannot swap a traditional Eagle chain onto a Transmission drivetrain or vice versa—the systems are mechanically incompatible despite both being 12-speed.
The rivetless construction eliminates the traditional outer plate peening that holds chain links together. Instead, SRAM machines each link to interlock without deformation, then secures the assembly with a PowerLock connector. This approach simplifies field repairs since you're only dealing with the connector rather than driving rivets, and it removes a potential failure point where traditional rivets can work loose over time.
Hard chrome plating covers the entire chain for corrosion and wear resistance. The plating addresses the reality that mountain bike chains spend significant time coated in trail grit and moisture—conditions that accelerate wear on untreated steel. The GX-level chain shares the same Flattop interface geometry as the X0, XX, and XX SL chains, with the higher-tier versions adding treatments like gold nickel plating or hollow pins for weight reduction....
