Description
12-speed road cassettes split into two camps: those designed around traditional gear ranges and those built to eliminate the front derailleur entirely. The SRAM Rival XG-1250 serves both approaches depending on which configuration you choose. The 10-36T pairs naturally with a double crankset for road racing and fast group rides, while the 10-44T opens up 1x territory with enough range to handle steep gradients without a front shifter.
SRAM machines the XG-1250 from steel with a pinned construction that balances durability against weight. This isn't the one-piece machined approach you'll find on the higher-end Force and Red cassettes, but the pinned design keeps costs reasonable while still delivering clean shifts across the full range. The steel cogs handle the torque loads of hard accelerations and grinding climbs without the wear concerns that come with aluminum cogs on less expensive cassettes.
The XDR driver body requirement matters here. If your current wheels run a Shimano HG freehub or the older SRAM XD standard, you'll need a driver body swap or a wheelset that already has XDR installed. Most manufacturers offer XDR drivers as an aftermarket upgrade, but it's worth confirming compatibility before ordering. The XDR interface positions the cassette slightly outboard compared to HG, which is how SRAM fits twelve cogs while maintaining chainline geometry.... Read More
