Description
The Vittoria Cross XG Pro TNT is one of the best tubeless cyclocross we have seen. Based on the Pro series, tubular EVO XG, this clincher has the latest tread compound developed from World Cup experience. The self-cleaning directional tread pattern delivers maximum traction and control in a variety of conditions. Vittoria users will recognize the XG tread, though it now appears to have just a little more depth to the knobs, making it ideal for most conditions, short of serious mud.
The 150 tpi casing of the XG Pro TNT is not quite as supple as many Vittoria tires, especially on the sidewall. This is because reinforcement is required to meet the UST standard. This also means you get a much more durable sidewall for the low pressures tubeless will allow. Even with the 700x31 (really a 32mm), the large volume of the casing will give you a terrific footprint, allowing the XG tread to truly shine on hardpack, loose ground, grass, or soft dirt. It really is a versatile design, and that comes into play over the span of a cross race day, when the repetitive use will chew up a course, let alone when rain, snow or changing temperatures enter into the equation.
Tubeless technology lets you savor the convenience of clinchers and the flat protection of a tubeless system. Vittoria designed TNT to work best with UST rims, but we have had positive experiences, both in-house and customer reported, with a variety of tubeless rim designs. Most significantly, many have shared great experiences with NoTubes wheels, which generally don't play nicely with UST tires. Like all tubeless tires it can be run with or without an inner tube. The XG Pro TNT allows pressure as low as 45psi with a tube without the risk of a pinch flat. That is the recommended minimum, but tubeless users report success below 30 psi. You have to decide how the tires best perform with your wheels and riding style. Running tubeless with sealant will seal up small punctures quickly so you can keep racing and not get stuck in the pits. Vittoria highly recommends their Pit Stop Sealant for the lightest, most tire friendly set-up, but most non-ammonia latex sealants work fine.
If you are a cross enthusiast who wants to race a tubeless clincher set-up, the Vittoria XG Pro TNT is a great tire option. It can dominate such a wide range of conditions, you don't need to have a quiver a tires. In fact, the only other tire would recommend would be a spare XL Pro- a perfect rear tire for muddy conditions. Otherwise the XG Pro TNT is the way to go.
