Aerodynamic wheel design tends to follow predictable patterns—deeper rims, wider profiles, incremental refinements to leading edges. The Zipp 454 NSW Tubeless Disc abandons that approach entirely. Rather than settling on a single rim depth, engineers developed a scalloped shape that varies from 58mm to 53mm around the circumference, creating what Zipp calls the Sawtooth profile. The result is a wheel that manages airflow differently than any conventional deep-section rim, using biomimicry principles borrowed from humpback whale fins to control turbulence across a wider range of wind angles.
The Sawtooth design addresses a fundamental problem with deep wheels: crosswind stability. Traditional deep rims present a consistent surface to side winds, which can create sudden handling forces when gusts hit. The 454 NSW's variable depth disrupts this pattern, breaking up vortices before they fully form and reducing the steering input that riders feel when conditions get gusty. Rim construction uses Zipp's ABLC dimpling across the brake track and leading edge, a surface treatment that further manages airflow attachment.
