Description
Sawtooth aerodynamics define the Zipp 454 NSW, a wheel design that emerged from biomimicry research into humpback whale tubercles. The scalloped rim profile—alternating between 58mm and 53mm depths around the circumference—disrupts the airflow patterns that destabilize conventional deep-section wheels in crosswinds. Where traditional rims present a uniform surface that catches gusts uniformly, the 454's undulating shape breaks up vortices before they build enough force to push the wheel offline. The result is a 58mm-class wheel that handles more like something considerably shallower when the wind picks up.
Zipp developed the Sawtooth rim through computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel testing, but the practical outcome matters more than the engineering process: riders can run deeper wheels in conditions that would normally demand a depth compromise. The tubeless-ready hookless bead works with tires from 28mm to 50mm wide, though Zipp recommends 28mm as the optimal pairing for aerodynamic efficiency. Internal width measures 23mm, providing a stable tire platform that supports lower pressures and improved compliance without sacrificing cornering precision.
The rear wheel ships with either Shimano/SRAM or XDR freehub compatibility, covering 11-speed and 12-speed drivetrains from both ecosystems. Zipp's ZR1 hub uses a 66-tooth ratchet driver that engages in under six degrees of rotation—responsive enough for technical efforts and sprint accelerations where immediate power transfer matters. Six sealed cartridge bearings handle the load distribution, with the freehub body running on its own dedicated bearing set separate from the main hub bearings.... Read More
