Description
Flared drop bars make more sense the rougher your routes get. The Zipp Service Course SL-70 XPLR takes that principle and builds a handlebar specifically around gravel riding demands—the drops kick out 12 degrees from the hoods, which opens up your hand position when you're descending chunky terrain or muscling through corners. That wider stance at the drops gives you more leverage and stability exactly when you need it most, without forcing you into an unnaturally wide position up on the hoods where you spend most of your time.
The bar dimensions tell you where Zipp expects this to live. A 70mm reach keeps the hoods accessible without stretching you out, and the 123mm drop puts your hands low enough to weight the front wheel on descents without requiring contortionist flexibility. The 31.8mm clamp area works with standard road and gravel stems, while the tops feature a short flat section that accommodates bar-top accessories like GPS mounts or accessory bags. Internal cable routing through the bar ends creates a clean cockpit that works with both mechanical and electronic shifting systems.
Construction uses 7050 aluminum rather than carbon, which is a deliberate choice for this application. Aluminum gives you consistent feel and predictable flex characteristics across temperature ranges—it doesn't get stiffer in cold weather or develop the micro-stress concerns that can affect carbon bars over years of rough use. The SL-70 XPLR also survives the inevitable handlebar-to-ground contact that happens during bikepacking trips or race mechanicals better than carbon alternatives. For riders who prioritize long-term durability and repairability over saving the last few grams, aluminum remains the practical choice.... Read More
