Description

From bottle cages to handlebar tape, and bells to seat bags, Arundel has continually released products that are smartly designed, well made, and popular with cyclists. The Arundel Floor Pump 1 carries that run of success forward. It is actually stunning that the Texas company can design and produce such a high quality Presta valve floor pump for under $100, yet it exists and you can buy it here. Virtually every component piece, finish, and functional item would lead you to believe this pump must cost more. An anodized forged base? The precise, mandrel-drawn aluminum shaft? Stainless steel internal components? Machined aluminum Presta pump head? One meter long durable rubber hose with threaded metal fittings? Seriously.
Suffice to say that this a well made pump. Rated to 160psi, and manageable to actually drive pressure to that number only seen on the track these days, the Floor Pump 1 has a large (3" diameter) very easy-to-read dial gauge. We tested it manually against out best digital pumps and a handheld pressure gauge and every reading was within 1-2psi. The base feels incredibly stable, with a good weight, and never feels flimsy. The stout wood handle is simple in shape but feels substantial and just right on the hands as you drive to higher pressures. Every feature of the pump just seems more luxurious than the price point would indicate.
Arundel designed their own Presta valve specific thumb lever-style head. By name it is called the Hansel (optionally- a thread-on Gretel head is sold separately for Schrader, and the Woodsman is a classic push on design for Presta that threads off for Schrader use). The Hansel's lever offers ease of use and outstanding leverage, with a solid hold on the valve via a replaceable rubber grommet. Having tried all three Arundel pump heads, any of which can thread onto the hose end, we can say they all work well and we definitely prefer the Gretel for Presta-only use.
Many cyclists treat pumps as semi-disposable items, a trend all too driven by the bike industry itself. if you ride regularly for training, fitness, pleasure or transportation you know the value of reliable floor pump. Metal pumps are back in vogue, with some carrying prices 2-4 times higher than the Arundel. That is why we see such an overwhelming value in quality construction, design and performance from the Floor Pump 1. If you are looking for durable, every day floor pump for Presta valves (and the flexibility to add Schrader as well) we offer a high-level recommendation for the Arundel.
