Ritchey BreakAway Pro Cross Frame Kit

The Ritchey BreakAway Cross frameset makes it easy to travel with a full-size bike that rides just like a regular cross bike. It features a patented system that is lighter, requires no special tools and faster to use than other travel bike systems. The BreakAway cross packs into the included 8.5" W x 26.5"H x 31"L travel case with wheels. Ritchey does not guarantee what the airlines will charge, but most find it is usually much less than a full-size bike case.

The investment cast lugs and Cromoly compression coupling by the bottom bracket are the keys to the BreakAway design. The lugs securely grip the seatpost in two places and join the upper portion of main triangle to the rear. On the downtube, nearly at the bottom bracket shell, the compression coupling forms the lower connection for the front and rear triangles. The coupler clamps unobtrusively around small flanges on the downtube.

This simple and effective design only adds 100 grams to the frame. Only a 4mm and 5mm Allen wrench and the removal of two bolts are required to take apart or assemble the frame. Cables are separated with these easy to use cable splitters.

  • Swiss Cross inspired design and geometry
  • Patented locking compression coupling system
  • F & R eyelets for rack mounting
  • Ritchey heat treated, Cromoly butted steel tubing
  • Includes reusable nylon/cloth tube covers
  • Utilizes custom butted heat treated Ritchey steel tubing
  • Comes with Travel case, 1 1/8" carbon fork with alloy steerer, headset and brake bosses

I purchased this knowing it would never be used exclusively as a cross bike. It's been to Europe as a light touring bike and at home it's my commuter with fenders. Since it's so vesatile, I can even call it my gravel bike or a mountain bike when I feel like riding some trails. I have two wheelsets to match the terrain I want to ride. With the bike (54cm) and clothing packed in it's case, the weight is around 45 lbs.

Pros Never been charged an airline bike fee, vesatility

Cons None

I bought this to consolidate bikes. I had a bike Friday for traveling and a Surly Crosscheck as my everyday ride (commuting, training, rain bike). I decided I would get this and eliminate the bike Friday. No offense to the Friday, it's s well designed machine. I built this up with a mixture of components off my trusty old Surly. Shimano Claris 8 speed shifter, old 105, etc. this is a GREAT frame, I've ridden it about 250 miles so far and am really impressed with the ride quality. And taking it apart and putting it in the INCLUDED suitcase is a pretty simple job. They give you everything you need to pack it up, pads for everything, safely. So I have this perfect all around bike, my commuter, training, rainy weather, AND travel bike. Brilliant design, love it!!!

Pros Easy to pack, nice ride, not too heavy, suitcase

Cons White frame gets dirty easily
