Selle Italia Flite Titanium 1990 Saddle
The most popular saddle of the 90's was the Selle Italia Flite Titanium for several reasons. First, It was light, with a weight in the low 200 gram range. Second, many riders found the flatter shape more supportive and a better fit for aggressive riding. Third, the dense thin padding was more comfortable than the much heavier and over-padded saddles they were currently using. The padding is firm, but supportive and didn't promote heat or friction build-up. The titanium rails offered flex and passive suspension. In addition to comfort and low weight, it featured an attractive new look- low profile and svelte compared to other saddles of the day.
Unfortunately, in 2006-07 Selle Italia 'updated' the design and stopped producing this original Flite Ti saddle. While some riders liked the new Flite design many preferred the aesthetics, shape and comfort of the original. Many riders were stunned and sought them out far and wide. Selle Italia heard the desires of their long-term fans, and the original 1990 Flite was re-released again. It was a best seller then and continues to be a best seller today. A cool fact for all you cycling historians - Selle Italia is calling the Flite re-issue the 1990, when in fact, it was actually introduced in mid-1991.
Selle Italia has not released information as to how long they will continue to produce this vintage saddle, but for now, original Flite lovers can breathe easy. Many of the regulars pick one up every 6 months or so, just in case. If you have never ridden the original Flite, but prefer a stiff saddle, with minimal, but effective padding, and a cross between today's narrow and mid-width saddles, we encourage you to give the Flite Titanium 1990 Saddle a try. With the real leather cover, solid titanium rails, and 90% nylon/10% carbon shell, the 230 gram saddle will carry you, as it has thousands of others, to the front of the pack.
Please Note: Due to manufacturing variances, saddle may be different than pictured.

Best saddle I had, awesome!
AnonymousPosted on 2/10/2015
Most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden upon. Still riding the original saddle purchased in mid-1991. Regardless of its age, it still feels better that all the new saddles I have recently purchased (3) to replace it. Was beside myself when Selle Italia offered a re-release of the old design. Hope it meets the same quality standards for which the mfg is known.
Pros Best comfort, weight and appearance
Cons None: Not interested in white leather

Best Saddle Ever! But please please please Selle Italia bring back the smooth White version as well.
Cons No White version!!

Best saddle ever, but the genuine gel version was even better. All day comfort, perfect taper, nice broad back.
Pros Shape, ti rails, genuine gel (on that version)
Cons Build quality not always 100

I know from experience that manufacturers of ANYTHING have to redesign stuff, just to redesign stuff. I constantly ask myself "What was wrong with the old one? ARRRRGH!!" Well, I have a Flite saddle on my road racing bike, my full suspension mountain bike, and my cyclocross bike, and they are nothing short of awesome. It's almost a fringe benefit that they are superlight and look super cool. Interestingly enough, they all have a different cover, as well. The cross bike is smooth black, the MTB is perforated black, and the road bike is a very handsome smooth white with a large woven Selle Italia badge, and I'm concerned that I won't be able to replace it when it's thrashed! My bum's been likin' these saddles for upwards of 20,000 miles!
Pros LOOKS COOL!, very comfy

I have this saddle on all my road bikes and I have 5 "spares" in my parts bin. Am I obsessed about using them forever? Probably. Each rider has his or her own anatomy to consider but ask why Selle Italia needed to reintroduce this model after the so-called updated one came out. Also notice that a couple recent World Champions have been using this saddle and you come to see that it's near perfect for many of us.

The Flite was HANDS DOWN the best saddle out there. Tried all the new ones from Selle with nothing but pain! You can see how lost this company was by attempting to re-engineer perfection with their most recent line. So glad they brought it back PLAIN. Now lets get the re-issue in white blue and red and we will all be stylin'!
Pros Great styling and fit. Perfect all around saddle.
Cons Is there one?

Best saddle ever!!! I have one on my road bike, mountain bike and worn-out one with cover removed on my BMX cruiser. But they are all white... I really want a white saddle. Will that ever be an option?
Pros low weight, most comfortable shape

I am amazed! This is the exact same saddle from back in the day. Quality, appearance, feel - it is the same!

I still have my two "old" selle italia flite saddles on my mountain bike and old road bike. They have served me well over the past twenty years, and to date (in my mind) is the best saddle ever produced. I recently have purchased a new "1990" and now happly riding it on a colnago. Thanks flite, you are the boss.
Pros Looks great and fits sooo good.

This saddle to me is reminiscent of the very popular Turbo model of the 1980s. I road the Turbo on a custom steel bike for over 20 years. When the frame finally broke down and I had to purchase a new bike, I wanted to replace the stock Ritchey saddle. The reissue Turbo would have been a good choice but I wanted something that was as light as the Ritchey but more comfortable, the 1990 Flite was the perfect replacement. The saddle feels great on long rides, the light padding very comfortable. The real leather cover breaths and with a contoured shape, you dont slide around. The saddle weighed in at 237 grams, only 12 grams heavier than the Ritchey. Great value for the money.

And I'm SO glad they got rid of the logo patches on the Flight! I had an embroidered one that was OK, but the other had actual patches sewn on - they were stiff and located right under a bone... Not horrible but annoying that they would ADD something for no good reason to spoil an otherwise perfect seat. But the patches are gone now!
Pros no pain!

Incredibly happy to see this saddle return. My favorite all time saddle hands down. Much more aesthetically pleasing than the new version of the Flite.

Had the original flite saddle and loved it, tried a slr carbonio and although it was lighter made my butt sore. Thought it would break in after awhile but never did. Got a new flite and love it. soreness gone.

The original is still the best! I have an original Flite and an original Flite Gel, and they are both supremely, divinely, beguilingly comfortable. Even after hours and hours, and miles and miles, my saddlery region remains comfortable and unpained. The "plain" version sees use day-in-day out on my commuter, about 8 miles over choppy roads each way each day. So glad to see theyre back. As long as they keep making them, Ill keep buying them.

Absolutely the best saddle made. Its a pretty good value too. I hope they keep making these..

I have 4 bikes and all have the original flite saddle on them. I have 2 spares that I have for backup. Please keep them in production and I will continue to purchase them. Thanks for bringing them back.

Wow... my retro saddle just came into vogue!

I love these! I was using an SLR for half a year and then realized I was being silly - I had a Flite in my closet and the SLR was okay, but just not as great. I have it on my brand new carbon LOOK and a 2005 steel Casati; it is excellent on both of them. Just got back from putting in 45 miles and the saddle felt great. A few sores I had from riding the SLR for too long are gone. And, it isnt even that expensive. Please, please, please Excel folks get yours hands on these in white, if you can!

Ive been riding this saddle since 1993. The shape of the saddle is what made this saddle revolutionary when it was first released and is still its best feature. The long nose allows you to move up easily for climbing and the tail shape makes it easy to slide off the back for drop offs. Add good cushioning and light weight and you have a true classic.

So glad these are back! Best. Saddle. Ever. (although, I agree it would be nice to have a color choice, just white even....)

Glad to see that Selle Italia brought this saddle back. I have an old Flite Gel and I like the regular version better. Price is a little more, but everything has gone up.

Very glad Selle brought this saddle back. Extremely comfortable for every style of riding out there. Only complaint I have is that there are no markings on the rail for fore/aft positioning in the seatpost. Even without this feature the saddle is totally worth it!

Rode this saddle for 19 years and used it for EVERYTHING ( climbing, time trialing, century rides, racing, mountine bikeing, you name it!). I have since tried several different saddles since they changed the design with only mild succes. This is a great saddle. Its great on long rides, has excellent support & have NEVER experanced any problems in the pelvic area. Its also built very well and are very durable ( i have 14 bikes with flight saddles on them and never have one fail on me, and some of them have over 70,000 plus miles on them!), and its reasonably priced too! Glad Selle brought this one BACK!!!

Ive tried or owned more than 20 different saddle types since the middle 80s, and still ride a Flite just about every day. I have 8 rideable bikes, 6 have Flites, including the mountain bike. They are quite durable as well,Im very happy they are back.

I agree- best one put there for me, for sure. Glad its back, but do wish for a few color choices. Last time I saw these available a few years ago I stocked up. Hope they keep bringing it back every few years!

Finally! Still riding my old one, but after a couple crit crashes it is looking very shabby. The best saddle.

Best saddle out there, in my opinion. Glad theyve brought it back.
