The most popular saddle of the 90's was easily the Selle Italia Flite titanium for several reasons. It was light with a weight in the low 200 gram range. Many riders found the shape and padding more comfortable than the much heavier and over-padded saddles they were currently using. The padding is firm, but not to hard and the titanium rails offered flex and passive suspension. In addition to comfort and low weight, it looked stellar - low profile and svelte.
This amazing design had a lot of firsts: first Titanium railed saddle, first saddle with medium to hard density padding, first saddle to break into the low 200 gram weight category. By anyones measure, this product was innovative and a winner.
Unfortunately, in 2006-07 Selle Italia 'updated' the design and stopped producing the original Flite Ti saddle. While some riders liked the new Flite design many preferred the aesthetics, shape and comfort of the original. Now the original 1990 Flite is available again. It was a best seller then and continues to be a best seller today. For all you cycling historians - Selle Italia is calling the Flite re-issue the 1990, when in fact, it was actually introduced in mid-1991.
