The Race Type D EVO2 tire is a result of expensive R&D that Panaracer can afford due to the fact that their parent company Panasonic has deep resources. The Race D Evo2 is considered by many riders (and our staff) to be one of the best training-endurance tires on the market. This tire is a perennial favorite by both riders who seek many miles out of their tires or ruffians who need the utmost in durability vs. performance. Big upgrades in the EVO2 feature longer wear times, less rolling resistance and a slightly wider inner diameter for easier tire installation.
The Race D EVO2 is essentialy the Race A EVO2 with some modifications to enhance durability. It still features the AC All Contact shape and profile and ZSG Dual Compound tread. The AC/All Contact refers to the steeper angle and profile/shape of the tread from the center of the tire to the bead. When the tire rolls over to a lean angle, you get complete contact or All Contact for superb grip and stability. The ZSG dual compound tread features a harder center durameter for less resistance and faster rolling while pointing the bike straight. The sides of the tread are a softer and more flexible compound for grip when the bike is rolled over in a lean angle. Combine the dual compound ZSG tread with the AC profile and you get the synergy of complete stability while cornering with low rolling resistance when the bike is upright and rolling straight. The ZSG tread is elastic and resilient which leads to longevity. This tread technology is so good in fact, you end up with a superb handling race tread compound that lasts as long and is as durable as harder training compounds.
In contrast to the Race A, Panaracer choose to beef-up the protective layer and casing. The Race D uses the venerable PT Belt to protect the casing from pesky road debris and chose the 3D casing for added durability. This incredibly stout casing is layered in a 3-D hex pattern which gives the best possible protection while still offering good handling manners. All of these design features make the Race D EVO2 one of the best handling and durable endurance tires we offer. With its high mileage, durability in the field and eye on value, the Race D EVO2 is tough to beat. Choose from 700x23mm or 700x25mm diameters, both in all-black cosmetics with GP style graphics.
I have about 1,800 miles on a set of these Type D EVO2 in size 700x25c. I like the tire but it's a little noisy (high rolling resistance?) and very wide. I have them mated up to a Mavic Ksyrium Equipe which is a standard width rim (19mm outside width) and this tire at time of first installation measure just under 26mm (25.8mm) and after a long ride it flares to almost 27mm (26.8mm). I am not sure how the 23c is sized but that may be a better fit for someone looking for a slightly wider tire for a race bike. The 25c doesn't provide much clearance in my Cannondale EVO and I need to go to a narrower tire.
Since these are marketed as the most durable of the Racing Type series of tires I'll comment that they are durable. I didn't have a single flat on generally good condition roads with occasional glass and other crud.
Pros: Durble and long wearing
Cons: They run wide and get wider after the first ride
