This adapter can be used for two things. First is what they were designed for - using SPD-R cleats on an industry standard 3 hole shoe mounting pattern. The second and more popular use is for mounting Shimano mountain SPD cleats on standard road shoes. We find riders sometimes enjoy running mountain pedals with road shoes or for spinning classes.
