The KMC Chain Industrial Company's sole focus is to create the world's best chains by amalgamating proven construction methods with quality raw materials. They have a manufacturing campus in Tainan County, Taiwan where all product is produced in-house to control quality. Since the mid-80s KMC has had a partnership with Shimano. Chain making is a complex process and requires specialty facilities. Shimano chose KMC because they're simply one of the best at producing chains.
The X11SL Ti Nitride is KMC's top of the line offering to fit all Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo 11 speed drivetrains. The chain is joined with KMC's Missing Link connector link. This greatly simplifies the installation process and also allows the user to remove the chain for cleaning and bike maintenance. The weight of this X11SL chain in the feathery 230 gram range. This is made possible from the inclusion of hollow pins and side plates. The inner and outer plates are chamfering to allow the chain to move from gear to gear precisely. The Double X Bridge shape outer plate helps to provide lightning fast shifts by improving stiffness of each link. Bushing-less construction helps give the chain what KMC refers to as noiseless function and our experience confirms this chain is one of the quietest we have ever worked with.
This chain gets its gold appearance thanks to its Titanium Nitride coating providing both amazing corrosion and stretch resistance. Good looks, excellent shifting, low noise and super easy installation definitely make it worth every penny.
The X11SL Gold chain is compatible with Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo 11 speed drivetrains.
Smooth shifts. Quiet operation. Plenty of compliments. Renowned for it's durability, and I'm sure it is well-deserved.
Woops: I wrote the negative review of the chain not being compatible with Shimano Di2; however, my comments were premature. After installing a Dura Ace 11 chain, the problem still occurred. We now think the problem lies with a worn front chainring, NOT the KMC chain. I will be trying the KMC again, to see.
I purchased the top of the line Gold 11 speed for use with a new Dura Ace 11 cassette with my Dura Ace gruppo. Anytime a lot of power was applied, the chain made a loud cracking noise and shifted from the large front chainring to the small. It is not compatible with Di2 Dura Ace from my experience. An expensive mistake.
Pros: Looks cool
Cons: Doesn't work as advertised
I love these chains. Super quiet and smooth shifts and they look great too. Using on both Campy Record 10 and Campy Super Record 11 drivetrains with no issues.
Pros: Crisp shifts, quiet
Cons: none so far
It shifts well, easy to keep clean and almost never looks dirty. It is on my Colnago Supreme Power with Zipp wheels and Enve fork.
Pros: All around good chain so far
