Enduro style riding and racing asks the most of any wheel design. From handling drops from up to 4 feet, able to laugh off harsh impacts and technical trail, and yet being light enough for both quick accelerations and long grinding climbs, the Crossmax XL Pro is an ideal wheel for 27.5 riders who push all the boundaries and want to be able to repeat the effort the next day, equipment intact. This 6-bolt disc, Shimano freehub version is a great value at demo pricing, and as you can see from the pics, it is near perfect.

The business end of the Crossmax XL Pro is the lightweight, yet incredibly strong 23mm internal width UST rim (27mm external) which is capable of handling tires from 1.5 to 3.0", though the latter makes more sense for the intended purpose. The sidewalls have been strengthened to handle more impact, yet Mavic has used their ISM milling process to remove non-essential material elsewhere, keeping the rim as light as possible without compromising the strength of the extruded Maxtal alloy. The usual playlist of Mavic rim tech is here: SUP welded and milled joint, FORE drilled spoke nipple inserts, Maxtal. The 24 (front and rear) flat bladed, straight pull Zicral spokes are run 2x on the front wheel for impact protection, and Isopulse on the rear, which is radial for the driveside and 2x for the non-drive for optimal energy transfer and better spoke tension balance from flange to flange. The proven high tension design is trustworthy and sure.

The key to Mavic's high tension system is the machined alloy hubs, with stout flanges and spoke guides that hold the spokes in place while in traction to the rim, but allow the spoke ends to move slightly under impact, decreasing the force on the rim, reducing the risk of dents or blowouts. The one-piece hubs distribute force and power, utilizing oversized alloy axles to keep the wheels tracking properly with the high quality steel sealed cartridge, super smooth, micro-adjustable QRM+ bearings. Pedaling power, acceleration and fast, sure high and low speed engagement is delivered by the 2x2, 4 pawl ITS-4 freehub system. The hubset can be run with QR's and different thru-axles. This wheelset is prepped for 12/142 rear and 15/100 in the front. Mavic makes adapters for other sizes.

Mavic was an original partner in development of the UST tubeless standard and maintains the system today. With this WTS (wheel tire system) set, Mavic supplies UST Tubeless Ready Crossmax Quest tires. These 66 TPI tires apply the 55/50shoreA X-Mix dual rubber compound to great effect, keeping the center firmer for durability, traction, and speed, while softening on the side and shoulders for considerably more grip, especially when run at the low pressures afforded by the sealed rim bed of the UST rim. The casing is reinforced with Guard+, a protection layer that adds strength and puncture protection.
