Description

Excel has made a special purchase of rep demo and display wheels from Mavic. Most have been barely ridden, if at all, and are available at great discounts. Get a terrific deal on these Mavic wheels. We have only one per item, so don't delay!

Deep section wheels have gotten lighter, faster and more efficient over the years, as well as more stable and better handling in any wind condition. Mavic knows that aerodynamics favor the wheel and tire that best manage airflow as integrated unit. Mavic's CXR 80 Tubular WTS Wheelset is a perfect example. The CXR 80 features a deep section profile rim that has tremendous rolling speed and excellent efficiency. Any road racer or triathlete who wants to be competitive has to know how to exploit aerodynamic wheels. This integrated Wheel Tire System cheats the wind by using wind-tunnel research to match the profile of the rim and the tire to best direct air flow around the tire and to improve laminar flow off the surfaces at any yaw angle. Special grooves in the rim assist in this process, called the CX01 Blades system. Given that Mavic was engineering the tire and rim at the same time, the tire matches up flawlessly.

The 80mm rim itself was developed along NACA aero guidelines to minimize lateral wind resistance and maximize laminar propulsion. As with many other new aero wheels, the CXR 80 is wider at 27mm external. The 100% UD carbon fiber rims are exceptionally light, yet are laid-up for maximum results. Traditional spoke hole drilling is reinforced from the inside to keep the rim surface clean and slippery in the wind, yet plenty strong enough to carry the high tension loads required by the straight-pull steel spokes. The double-butted spokes are bladed, with 16 laced radially on the front wheel, and 20 laced 2x drive, radial non-drive on the rear. The steel spokes work with the rim to damp vibration and road chatter, while slicing through the air. The hubs feature Mavic's carbon center tube with aluminum flanges, which has been a very reliable, and light production technique. The oversized aluminum axle provides excellent stiffness and rides on some of the top steel cartridge bearings in the industry, the QRM+. With this hubset, the bearing pre-load is micro-adjustable. On the rear hub, the FTS-L aluminum freehub body keeps things light, with consistent positive engagement.

The carbon brake surfaces are perfectly aligned and prepared for minimizing heat from braking. Mavic recommends their carbon-specific brake pads for optimal stopping power and best feel. As the CX01 Blades transition the rim design to the tubular tire, it is clear that no other tires will utilize the blades in the same way as the Mavic offering. For the front wheel, Mavic has opted for the Yksion CXR GripLink Tubular in the 23mm width. The rear offers the PowerLink version of the same tire. These designs are optimized for the requirements of each wheel, with the front geared towards speed and cornering grip, while rear has more protection and lower rolling resistance.

Rolling speed is a function of rider power, overall aerodynamics, and relaxed control. With the Cosmic CXR 80, Mavic has left the power and rider aerodynamics up to you, but supplied a set of deep section wheels that flat out fly. The wider rim, CX01 Blades, CXR tubulars, and QRM+ bearings do their part, and the extra wide rim really does allow the rider to trust in the handling capabilities. enabling them to relax, create efficient power and let the wheels roll. If you crave speed, the CXR 80 WTS is the tubular wheelset for you. Return to Top
