Most cyclists, including our staff and friends, we are introduced to the Assos brand through purchase of a pair of bibs shorts. The Assos bib has been around for decades and each passing iteration ushers in a new standard for comfort, fit and performance. They are industry staples and tacitly considered by experienced cyclists to be the top choice for a high-end performance based garment. In essence, these bibs are the gateway into discovery and introduction of all of the other wonderful Assos offerings. And that leads us to ALS.
ALS is an acronym which stands for Assos Layering System. Read and say the words and the simple use of base layers under a long sleeve jersey or jacket come to mind. A deeper look at ALS reveals to us that it is far more than a simple function of layering garments. ALS is both a noun and a verb and beyond those classifications, it is a new way of thinking about how to dress and use your Assos active wear. It is the intentional understanding and use of combinations of unique Assos garments that coordinate and function in different climate ranges which creates a synergy that ups your performance and comfort.
The core of any ALS environment is the Assos skinFoil base layer. We will give you two contrasting ways of using ALS for comparison using a warm 80 degree day. In its simplest and most basic form, ALS would be using a sleeveless base layer under a short sleeve jersey in this condition. Now let's take that example and expand it into a more modern way of thinking about layering through advanced ALS. Same conditions and temperatures, but you choose a short sleeve summer base layer and the Assos sleeveless jersey (nS.superLeggera). This effectively treats the baselayer as the jersey and the sleeveless jersey as a thin vest.
Let's expand on this concept. When the mercury drops more opportunities develop for you to expand your range and ALS yourself in many different ways. Using the above examples, but with the temperature at 60 degrees, you could use a short sleeve spring base layer (SS.skinFoil Spring) with an IJ. Intermediate jersey or consider going into advanced ALS mode with a thinner long sleeve base layer (LS.skinFoil Fall) and a FalkenZahn layering vest. In both of these cases, the same goal has been achieved with the first offering slightly better frontal wind protection and the latter offers a slightly more snug and aerodynamic fit.
