PRO Softshell fabric is a three layer construction. All three layers are built to be flexible, with appropriate stretch. The inner layer provides insulation. The brushed polyester inner surface is soft and glides with the body, over any under clothing. While moving, the fabric actively pulls moisture and releases it to the middle membrane layer, which is designed to release it through the outer layer without compromising weather and water protection. With a high percentage of nylon, the outward facing layer effectively blocks wind and is close to completely waterproof.

Working as an integrated system, the PRO Softshell delivers exceptional warmth and protection for it's weight, yet remains soft and flexible enough to be completely supple for the stress of the riding positions. The anatomical cut and panel design both takes advantage of the material, and enhances it's properties. A contoured, shaped sleeve and wrist hem follow the form and function of the arm, and is long enough to cover the back of the wrist without having fabric bunching up on the underside. A similar concept is employed at the collar- high in the back, lower in the front, and in the overall length, short in front, long in the back.

Given the history of Pearl Izumi, such care is expected, and the details are incredibly well thought out. The large rear pocket is accessed through zippers at slash angled entrances from both left and right sides. The angle of entry and placement makes using the pocket while riding feasibly safe. The long zipper pulls can be grabbed and manipulated up and down with ease and the opening is large enough for a gloved hand. A second, zippered security pocket sits outside the center of the main pocket and is perfect for your phone, ID, etc. On the front, the double main zipper features an upper draft flap and zipper garage for neck protection, yet easy ventilation from the top or bottom as conditions change. For added protection from the elements, an external draft flap was also added at from the base of the sternum to the top of the front collar. Reflective elements provide visibility in low-light conditions.
