XTR M9000's shift levers can be used to perform single or multiple shifts in one lever movement. They also use Shimano's two-way release system. This means riders can change gears using just a thumb or a thumb and forefinger. The longer new carbon levers feature a little more texture for better grip.

The Vivid Index Mechanism features reworked internals to offer an easier action and ensure that every single shift feels identical. XTR now gets the same polymer-coated inner gear cables as Shimano's top end Dura-Ace road group set, the result is a 20 percent reduction in shifter effort compared to previous M980 XTR shifters.

The SL-M9000 shifters are sold separately for front and rear. The front shifter can be configured to shift a two or three ring crankset. Obviously, the front shifter is not required if you opt for the 1x11 (single front chainring) M-9000 setup. These shifters only work with the 11-speed mechanical group.
