Description

Nougat is an old confection made from sugar, honey, egg white, and nuts, and the recipe works well as riding food. Amacx took that base and turned it into the Energy Nougat Bar, a soft chew with 32 grams of carbohydrate per bar in a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio. It's part of the Amacx Energy Line, where every product has about 30 grams of carbs and the same ratio. That means you can mix formats without redoing the math on your fueling plan.

The ratio matters because glucose and fructose use different absorption pathways in the gut. Combine them and your body can handle a large amount of carbs per hour without the stomach distress that comes from overloading a single pathway. The Energy Line is built around intakes of up to 90 grams per hour. Each bar also has 50mg of sodium. That won't replace an electrolyte drink, but it chips away at what you lose through sweat over a long day.

The bar is soft enough that you won't spend a full minute chewing halfway up a climb. There's no chocolate coating, so nothing smears in a warm jersey pocket. Both flavors are gluten-free and lactose-free, but they are not nut-free or vegan. Each one contains almonds, honey, and egg white. The papaya version also has pistachios and a sulfite preservative, and the label warns of possible traces of other nuts.... Read More
