Description
Bottom bracket bearings sit directly in your pedaling force path, which means friction here costs you watts on every single pedal stroke. CeramicSpeed's BB Alpha for BSA addresses that reality with their grade 3 silicon nitride ceramic balls running against hardened steel races, a combination that reduces friction compared to standard steel bearing setups. The Alpha line sits below CeramicSpeed's SLT and UFO tiers in their product hierarchy, but the core ceramic bearing technology remains the same across the range. What changes between tiers is the race material and surface treatment, not the ceramic balls themselves. For most riders, the Alpha represents the entry point into CeramicSpeed's ecosystem where the performance gains per dollar spent are arguably the highest.
The BSA threading on this unit fits standard 68mm English-threaded bottom bracket shells, which covers the vast majority of road frames using a threaded interface. Installation is straightforward with standard bottom bracket tools, and the aluminum cups use a black anodized finish that holds up well against the elements. CeramicSpeed machines these cups to tight tolerances so the bearings seat correctly and the spindle runs true without play or binding. The unit supports 24mm spindles out of the box, which means direct compatibility with Shimano cranksets. If you're running SRAM DUB or other spindle diameters, you'll need the appropriate adapter sleeve, which CeramicSpeed sells separately.
What separates ceramic bearings from steel in practical terms is the surface hardness and roundness of the balls. Silicon nitride is significantly harder than steel, which means the contact surfaces deform less under load and the balls maintain their shape over a longer service life. CeramicSpeed's grade 3 rating refers to the precision of those balls, with tighter sphericity tolerances than lower-grade ceramics. The result is measurably lower rolling resistance that holds up over thousands of kilometers rather than degrading as the bearing surfaces wear in.... Read More
