Description
Aerodynamics on gravel bikes used to be an afterthought—something nice to have but rarely worth optimizing when the terrain itself creates so much resistance. The Cervelo Aspero-5 challenges that assumption directly. This all-new platform emerged from the same engineering approach that produced the S5 road bike, applying computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel testing to a frame designed for unpaved racing. The result shows in the numbers: 37 watts faster than its predecessor and 34 watts faster than the closest competitor at race speeds. UCI Gravel World Champion Marianne Vos debuted the frame at Worlds and won on it, which says something about where Cervelo aimed when designing this bike.
The aero advantage starts at the cockpit. Cervelo's HB16 carbon handlebar and ST31 carbon stem integrate with the frame's internal routing to present a smooth leading edge to the wind, contributing nearly 6 watts of the total aerodynamic savings on their own. Tube shapes throughout the frame draw from Cervelo's proven road racing library rather than conventional round profiles. A subtle seat tube cutout accommodates up to 45mm tires while maintaining smooth airflow around the rear wheel. Cervelo even optimized the geometry for mixed tire widths—running a 40mm front with a 44mm rear sharpens handling on faster courses while boosting aerodynamics further.
The downtube storage door, first developed for the P-Series triathlon platform, tucks a spare tube, tire lever, and CO2 cartridge inside the frame where they create zero additional drag. This system remains the lightest and most aerodynamically efficient in-frame storage available, and it eliminates the need for a saddle bag flapping in the wind behind you. Despite all the added surface area required for aerodynamic optimization, the new frame weighs 66 grams less than the previous Aspero-5.... Read More
