Description
Race bikes typically force a choice: commit to aerodynamics and accept the weight penalty, or chase grams and surrender the wind advantage. The Cervelo Soloist Ultegra Di2 occupies the ground between those extremes, drawing tube shapes from the S5 aero platform while borrowing the geometry and compliance characteristics that made the R5 a favorite among professional and amateur riders. The result lands approximately 250 grams lighter than the S5 and roughly 125 grams faster through the air than the R5, a deliberate compromise engineered for riders who want race-day performance without maintaining a stable of specialized machines.
Cervelo pulled the Soloist name from their archive, where it spent nearly two decades after defining an era of World Tour racing with CSC and the Cervelo Test Team. The revival carries more than nostalgia. Modern D-shaped tube profiles replace the original NACA sections, delivering improved torsional stiffness while the asymmetric chainstays transfer power efficiently through the BBright T47 threaded bottom bracket. That threaded interface matters for long-term ownership: bottom bracket service requires no specialized press tools, and the system runs quieter than press-fit alternatives when properly installed.
The geometry mirrors the R5 exactly, providing the poise and precision that makes descending feel controlled rather than committed. Handling characteristics favor stability without sacrificing responsiveness, a balance that rewards developing racers learning to hold position in a tight peloton as much as it benefits experienced riders pushing through technical descents. Tire clearance extends to 34mm measured width, accommodating the wider rubber that has become standard for both training and racing applications.... Read More
