Description

Aerodynamic drag on the front wheel determines efficiency at racing speeds more than any other single tire factor. Continental partnered with Swiss Side and DT Swiss to develop the Aero 111 TR, engineering 48 precision-formed cavities across the tread surface that function as vortex generators. These dimpled impressions create controlled turbulence patterns that keep airflow attached to the rim longer, reducing separation that normally occurs as air moves around the wheel. The effect extends beyond straight-line speed to crosswind stability, where maintaining laminar flow prevents the steering disruptions that plague conventional tire profiles.

The vortex generator concept borrows from aeronautical engineering, where surface dimples manage boundary layer behavior on aircraft wings and Formula 1 components. On a bicycle tire, the cavities sit shallow enough to avoid compromising the contact patch but deep enough to trigger beneficial micro-turbulence. Testing data shows reduced drag across yaw angles compared to smooth-tread designs, with the most pronounced benefits appearing between 5 and 15 degrees where riders spend significant time during crosswind exposure. The tire works specifically as a front-wheel application because rear wheel aerodynamics receive minimal benefit once airflow disrupts behind the seat tube.

Continental applies race-optimized BlackChili compound to the Aero 111, formulating the polymer blend for grip characteristics that exceed the standard GP5000 S TR mixture in wet conditions. Independent testing confirms this compound delivers measurably higher wet traction coefficients while accepting marginally increased rolling resistance compared to time trial-specific rubber. The Vectran breaker layer handles puncture protection using liquid crystal polymer fibers that resist penetration without the weight penalties of conventional breaker materials. Tubeless-ready construction allows setup with sealant or conventional tubes depending on rider preference.... Read More
