Description

Thermoplastic polyurethane changes what's possible with inner tubes. Continental's TPU Tube uses seven sealed layers of micrometer-thick TPU instead of traditional butyl rubber, creating a tube that weighs 35-45 grams depending on size while maintaining puncture resistance comparable to standard tubes. The weight reduction matters for riders chasing performance, but the compact folded size addresses a more practical concern: these tubes pack down to roughly one-third the volume of butyl tubes, leaving room in your pack or jersey pockets for tools, food, or other gear.

The seven-layer construction maximizes airtightness through material science rather than thickness. Each TPU layer is sealed to prevent air migration between layers, which means the tube holds pressure reliably despite the thin wall construction. Continental leaves the tubes uncolored because dyes can create surface imperfections that compromise air retention. The conical valve base fits more securely into rim valve holes, reducing movement that can lead to valve failure or air leaks. The valve features internal threading for valve extenders or replacement cores, giving you options for deep-section rims or field repairs.

TPU tubes require specific installation considerations. They must be used only with disc brake wheels, as rim brake heat can cause sudden pressure loss. When stored uninflated, TPU tubes should not exceed 0.3 bar pressure, as over-inflation can permanently deform the material. Once a TPU tube has been stretched to fit a tire, it cannot be reused with a smaller tire without risking damage. Each tube includes a repair kit designed specifically for TPU material, which uses different techniques than traditional patch kits.... Read More
